More than 80% of people diagnosed with diabetes Type 2 are considered obese or overweight. Research conducted by several agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control (the CDC), reveal that there is a clear link between obesity and diabetes. Two-thirds of men and women with Type 2 diabetes have a body mass index of 27 or higher, classifying them as overweight.
Obesity actually works against the body’s natural processes by diminishing insulin’s ability to control blood sugar levels. This increases the likelihood that a person will develop Type 2 diabetes because the body is over producing insulin to regulate glucose levels. When the body is no longer able to keep glucose levels in balance, a person will develop Type 2 diabetes.
Over the last four decades, obesity in America has more than doubled. Current statistics reveal that 58 million Americans are overweight, 40 million are obese, and 3 million are morbidly obese. Eight out of 10 people over the age of 25 are considered overweight. These numbers have caused a 76% increase in the prevalence of diabetes Type 2 among adults between the ages of 30 and 40 since 1990.
Obesity raises your risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure. You can actually prevent or delay the development of Type 2 diabetes by making changes to your diet and increasing your physical activity. Losing weight is challenging, but even a loss of 10 to 15 pounds can have a significant impact on your risk level.
Take control of your life and obesity by cutting back your fat and calorie intake. Try to do some type of exercise most days of the week. Eat breakfast every day, this will keep hunger in check and prevent you from overeating at your next meal time. Keep track of what you eat and drink, as well as any exercise you perform so you are able to identify the areas where you need improvement. These key steps will help you lose weight and lower your risk of developing diabetes Type 2.
