Many new medications for the treatment of type 2 diabetes have been added to the field over the last ten years. While taking several pills a day can be frustrating, these new drugs give patients better control over their blood glucose levels. The downfall is that, over time, the pancreas will continue to deteriorate and patients will require more and more diabetic medication. Companies are already preparing for this problem with new treatments for diabetes type 2.

Byetta is a new diabetic medication that is taken by injection. It is not insulin, but its multi-prong attack against high blood glucose is effective and it also helps suppress your appetite. Januvia is a new diabetes pill that works with the insulin your body produces, hormones, and natural enzymes to keep your blood sugar levels in check. While Metformin has been available for a while now, the manufacturer has recently developed an extended release pill that lacks the intestinal problems seen with the previous form.

Many companies are improving their diabetic drug combinations as well. Combinations like Amaryl and Glucophage work together to stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin. Actos and Avandia are being used in combination to break the body’s insulin resistance. Glucovance, Metaglic, Avandamet, and Avandaryl are all new FDA-approved combination diabetic medications.

Researchers have found that patients who are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes can use Metformin and Precose to reduce the chances of developing the disease. This new treatment for diabetes should be used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise.

While there is still no real cure for diabetes type 2, new advances in diabetic medicine give patients a positive outlook. Talk to your doctor about new treatments for diabetes type 2.
