Snacks are an important part of the diabetic meal plan. They help keep blood sugar levels stable while fighting hunger throughout the day. Diabetic snacks can include any number of fruits, vegetables, or carbohydrates.

If you are hankering for something sweet, why not try fruit as a diabetic snack? You can create a rainbow fruit salad by combining peeled and diced mango, blueberries, sliced bananas, halved strawberries, grapes, sliced nectarines, and sliced kiwi in a bowl. Then combine 1/3 cup unsweetened orange juice, 2 Tbsp. lemon juice, 1 ½ Tbsp. honey, ¼ tsp. ground ginger, and nutmeg in a separate bowl. Mix well. Drizzle the sauce over the fruit just before serving. One serving is equal to 4 ounces and contains 96 calories, 1 gram of fat, less than 1 gram of saturated fat, no cholesterol, and only 4 grams of sodium.

If you are looking for a quick snack with no prep, try one of the 100-calorie packs, available at most stores, as a diabetic snack. These portion controlled packs are satisfying and have minimal impact on blood sugar levels. There is something for everyone including cookies, chips, and crackers.

If you’’re craving popcorn, try one of the low fat versions! One serving size is equal to as much as 3 ½ cups and can contain up to 16% of your fiber intake for the day. Nuts and yogurt can also be included as a snack in your diabetic meal plan.

Diabetic snacks will prevent you from being hungry throughout the day. They also prevent overeating at meal times which can lead to a sharp increase in blood sugar levels. Schedule snacks at regular intervals between meal times to keep glucose levels in your target range.
